If you have already applied for permanent residency, you can apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP).
A BOWP is an open work permit for applicants who have applied for permanent residency under certain specified programs.
You must apply for a BOWP if your current permit is still valid or about to expire within 4 months.
Who Qualifies for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)?
You are only eligible for a BOWP if you have applied for permanent residency through the following programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
- Federal Skilled Trades Program
- Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
- Permanent Residence for Caregivers - the Caring for Children Program and the Caring for People with High Medical Needs Program
You must also be residing in Canada and have a valid status to apply for a BOWP. If your current status expires while your application is under process, you are allowed to work under implied status until a decision is made.
What is the Process for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)?
Applications of permanent resident status for the above-mentioned programs are processed through the Express Entry immigration application system. It is an online system by the government department of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Once your application is processed through the Express Entry system, you will receive an Acknowledgment of Receipt letter. You may immediately apply for a BOWP after you receive that letter.
The application for a BOWP is processed after completion of the required examination at the Centralized Intake Office.
If your application for permanent residence is incomplete, then you will not be eligible for a BOWP.
If you have applied for permanent residence under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), then your work permit will allow you to work only in your designated province.
