The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will hold the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program lottery beginning September 20, 2021. The lottery will nominate 30,000 applicants to the program over 2 weeks. Invited applicants will have 60 days to submit their completed application for permanent residence to the IRCC.

Earlier this year in July, Canadian Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino announced the details for the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship lottery.

Who Will Be Invited in the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Lottery for 2021?

Applicants who made their submission between October-November 2020 will be considered for this lottery.Through this time, Canadian permanent residents and citizens were allowed to submit a completed sponsorship application for their parents and grandparents online to the IRCC. Successful applicants under this program receive Canadian permanent residence and all the benefits that come with it, including universal healthcare and the eligibility to apply for Canadian citizenship eventually.

What Are the Eligibility Criteria for the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship?

The Canadian citizen or permanent resident filing the sponsorship application for their parent or grandparent must be at least 18 years of age. They will be required to demonstrate sufficient funds to support themselves and their sponsors in Canada. This requirement is called the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI). Eligible sponsors must have enough average income to meet the MNI for the last 3 years. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) evaluates your income and issues a Notice of Assessment. You must submit this notice to the IRCC to demonstrate that you meet the eligibility criteria for the MNI.

If you are a resident of Quebec, your income in the past 12 months must meet the province’s requirements to sponsor a parent or grandparent. In both cases, you will sign a financial undertaking to state that you will financially support your sponsor during a certain period and repay any social assistance obtained by your sponsor during this period.

What Can You Do If You Were Not Invited in the Parent and Grandparents Sponsorship Lottery 2021?

In case your application is unsuccessful; you do not receive an invitation from the lottery, you can always apply for a Super Visa. The Super Visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to visit Canada for an extended time. It is a multi-entry visa that is valid for up to 2 years after initial entry. The maximum validity of this visa is up to 10 years, so the holder can visit Canada multiple times during this period to stay for 2 years at a time.
