Alberta has introduced a new immigration program for international graduates living outside Canada. The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) launched the Foreign Graduate Start-Up Visa program on January 27, 2021.

According to the Minister of Labor and Immigration, Alberta is currently accepting applications for the new program. This program is for foreign students who wish to establish their businesses in Alberta.

Who is Eligible for the Foreign Graduate Start-Up Visa Program?

To qualify for the Foreign Graduate Start-Up Visa program, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Graduate from a post-secondary institution outside of Canada in the last 2 years with an educational credential that is equivalent to the Canadian degree
  • Have at least 6 months of full-time work experience in business management or ownership or work experience with a business incubator or business accelerator

How to Apply for the Foreign Graduate Start-Up Visa Program?

You will be required to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to be considered for provincial nomination under this particular stream. You can submit an EOI through the AINP Portal.

You will be required to meet the eligibility criteria regarding your education level, work experience and language proficiency. Based on the Points Assessment Grid for this program, your profile will be ranked and scored.

The highest scoring applicants will be invited to submit a Business Application. Currently, there is no set quota for this program and the AINP reserves the right to limit application intake and provincial nominations.

What Are the Other Options Available to Immigrate to Alberta?

If your end goal is to gain permanent residency in Alberta, you can opt for various other immigration streams offered under the AINP.

The Alberta Self-Employed Farmer Stream is for foreign nationals with farm management experience and enough financial resources to invest in a farming business in Alberta. The AINP also offers the Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS) and the Alberta Express Entry Stream for international skilled workers and graduates who meet the eligibility criteria.
