The government body of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the launch of a new online portal for various immigration programs that previously required paper-based applications for permanent residence.

Which 6 Immigration Programs Can Be Now Applied for Electronically?

The following permanent residence program was recently made available online:

It is unclear if this list will be further extended to include programs like the Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSWP) or even the Federal Self-Employed Program

Why Is It Important for Immigration Programs to Go Digital?

Going digital is the only way to ensure immigration levels are on target during this ongoing pandemic. Due to social distancing norms and travel restrictions, it has become increasingly difficult for immigrants to gather documents, travel outside and physically submit a paper-based application. There are also massive environmental factors to consider about maintaining a paper-based system. Digital makes things marginally easier to organize and store.

A digital application will also break down and make clear all the supporting documents required to complete the application, ensuring less time wasted on processing incomplete applications and missing documents. It has been observed that digital portals make it easier and faster to process applications. The clear difference can be seen in Express Entry aligned PNP streams that take only 6 months to process while a base PNP stream could have a processing time of up to 20 months as it relies on a paper-based submission.

Will All Canadian Immigration Programs Be Available Online?

The first step to take Canadian immigration online was taken in 2015 with the introduction of the Express Entry system. Since then, a small number of programs have been introduced on various provincial and federal portals. This shows that IRCC is serious about making immigration programs more accessible to everyone and developing a user-friendly system. However, this process is gradual and could take a few short years.
