The United States is currently experiencing the fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic as the Delta Variant spreads across the country. Given the rising Covid-19 infection cases, the US Department of Homeland Security announced the extension of US border restrictions until September 21, 2021.

First imposed in March 2020, these restrictions have been renewed monthly as Canada and Mexico also imposed their restrictions to minimize the risk of spreading the virus. This restriction will not impact American citizens in Canada returning to the US.

Can Americans Travel to Canada?

Canada lifted land border restrictions for vaccinated US travelers on August 9, 2021. Between August 9-15, thousands of Americans traveled to Canada for various purposes. During the same period in 2019, 1.6 million US travelers came to Canada via the land border.

Despite US land border restrictions for Canadians, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that while the two countries were coordinating closely, the border restrictions have been nonsimultaneous from the start.

The US Department of Homeland Security said that this decision was made in coordination with public health and medical experts. They are also working with partners across the US and internationally to effectively determine the correct time to lift border restrictions.

Both in Canada and the US, businesses especially tourism and airline industries are impacted by the border closures and restrictions on non-essential travel imposed due to the pandemic.
