Analysis: India remains the top country for new permanent residency in 2019-2020. In 2019, 17,600 Indian nationals immigrated to Canada through family sponsorships. However, the Covid-19 pandemic did have an impact on the number of Indian nationals who immigrated as family sponsors.

In the last 6 months of 2020, about 57.4% fewer Indians immigrated compared to 2019. Overall, the share of immigrants coming from Asia has been reduced to almost 16.7%. Chinese immigrants have, however, increased in 2020 to 10% compared to 9% in 2019.

Immigration of Filipinos has also reduced causing the Philippines to fall on the list. However, this can be attributed to low immigration targets for Caregiver immigration programs.

A majority of applicants for the Caregiver immigration programs come from the Philippines.

Currently, the pandemic has caused disruptions to the operations of Canada’s immigration system.

The government body of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced several new changes to different immigration programs to cope with the pandemic. Canada has significantly increased its immigration target to over 1 million new permanent residents over the next 2 years.
