Do you wonder if immigrating to Canada is worth it for you? Are there any jobs available? Will you be able to find a job after relocating to Canada? These are valid concerns, so in today’s article, we will be exploring what Canada’s labour market means for immigration.

Canada’s Job Market Continues to Grow

Statistics Canada reported that the country added 41,000 new jobs in April 2023. At the same time, unemployment rates are near record low, at just 5%. This means that plenty of new jobs need to be filled throughout Canada, and more jobs are only continuing to open up.

Of the 41,000 new jobs that opened in April, 24,000 were in the wholesale and retail trade industries. Additionally, 17,000 jobs opened up in warehousing and transportation.

Employment growth in Canada can and should be credited to immigration. Canada knows that immigration is an integral part of filling Canadian jobs.

Canada Plans to Welcome More Immigrants

Canada has made it clear that immigration is a valuable part of the plan to strengthen and develop the country’s economy.

Canada has a three-year plan that begins with welcoming 465,000 permanent residents in 2023. In 2024, Canada will welcome 485,000; in 2025, this number will grow to 500,000. Canada plans for many of these new permanent residents to immigrate through economic streams and pathways.

Likely, Canada’s immigration numbers will only increase in the coming years.

New Immigration Program to Fill Jobs

In addition to considering Canada’s immigration goals, we can consider Canada’s new immigration program specially designed to fill jobs. This new program will help applicants with work experience in five specific sectors to have a better chance of becoming permanent residents.

These five sectors include:

  • Jobs in the healthcare industry
  • Jobs in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)
  • Trade jobs such as carpentry, plumbing and contracting
  • Jobs in transportation
  • Jobs in the agriculture and agri-food industries

This new program is representative of how much Canada plans to continue to rely on immigration to support the Canadian economy. Moreover, this program is designed precisely for the purpose of filling in-demand jobs.

To become eligible for this new program, applicants will need at least six months of work experience in their field within the last three years.
