We hear from many students who are worried about pursuing their goal of studying in Canada. Whether you are concerned about qualifying for a study permit or navigating the visa process, there are some steps you can take to ensure that you will be successful.

Study Permit Processing Times

Depending on what country you’re from and how busy your consulate is when you submit your application, study permit processing times can vary from weeks to months.

You can always check estimated processing times on the IRCC website. This page is updated regularly.

Studying in Canada

Applying to study in Canada is an aspiration for many international students worldwide. Canada’s renowned education system has an excellent reputation. Studying in Canada is also a great first step if you want to relocate to Canada permanently and someday become a permanent resident. Your Canadian education will be extremely valuable to any future that involves living in Canada permanently.

Whatever your motivation for studying in Canada may be, you are bound to have concerns. It’s an entirely new environment that you will need to navigate, for the most part, on your own. Be sure to learn about support systems and advisors through your school. Also, remember that Canada has welcomed thousands of international students for years. In 2021, there were over 600,000 international study permit holders in Canada. So there are thousands of students going through the same process as you.

Applying For a Study Permit

You can apply for a study permit once you have been accepted to a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. Your acceptance to a school will depend on your grades, English language proficiency, and many other factors. Once you are accepted to a school and can apply for a study permit, you must pay the $150 processing fee.

From some countries, you can apply for a study permit through the Student Direct Stream, which is a faster way to get your study permit and begin your journey to Canada. You can submit your application through the Student Direct Stream online.

Common Reasons for Refusal

Study permit applications are usually refused for the following reasons:

  • Failure to provide sufficient evidence that you will leave Canada after your permit expires
  • Lack of ties to your home country
  • Failure to demonstrate financial stability
  • Employment prospects in your country of residence
  • Educational history

Tips for Approval

To avoid these issues and set yourself up for success, you can do the following:

  • Provide a clear statement of intent to explain your reasons for coming to Canada and demonstrate that you are prepared to leave once your permit expires
  • Complete a dual intent form if you will be applying for permanent residence at the same time as your study permit
  • Provide solid proof of finances, as well as proof of tuition payments and housing if possible
  • Meet all language requirements for your application
  • Explain any gaps in your studies.
  • Add any other supporting documentation that will help convince the immigration officer reviewing your application that your intentions are true
