The PR Pathway for International Graduates, launched on May 6, 2021, along with 5 other PR pathways reached its intake limit within 25 hours of being introduced. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (IRCC), recently revealed that the department accepted way more applicants than intended. The IRCC received 7,307 additional applications for the PR pathway.

The 6 new PR pathways were launched to facilitate the immigration of French and non-French speaking international graduates and foreign workers. These immigration pathways are to be operational until November 5, 2021, or until their intake cap has been reached.

What Does the IRCC Plan to Do With the Additional Applications?

According to the IRCC, the additional applications were accepted due to a technical error with the electronic system. The system was keeping track of the number of applications received by using a live counter that displays the number. However, the system mistook applications being submitted simultaneously as only one application. Therefore, if two applicants hit the send button at the same time, their application was counted as one by the system.

Due to this error, the Canadian immigration minister, Marco Mendicino will have to approve a temporary public policy to allow the IRCC to process these additional applications. Otherwise, the IRCC will be required to return all the applications with the fee paid. The applicants will likely receive that as an unfair decision as they have already received confirmation on their application by the IRCC.

Fortunately, this policy was approved by Marco Mendicino on June 28, 2021. However, this does not mean that the PR pathway will be open to new applications. The IRCC simply does not want applicants to suffer due to a technical error on their part.

What About Other PR Pathways?

There will be no change in the intake limit for other PR pathways as the IRCC does not anticipate receiving additional applications for other pathways. The live counter that displays the number of applications being received in the current time has also been monitored and has been manually synced to the database.
