Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently rejected the idea of opening the borders for unvaccinated travelers. Just days after Canada dropped its mandatory 14-day quarantine requirement for fully vaccinated travelers, the speculations for reopening the Canadian border started going around.

However, Prime Minister Trudeau clearly stated that it is not going to happen any time soon. The Canada-US border remains close to non-essential travel, at least until Jul 21, 2021. Currently, only Canadian citizens and permanent residents are allowed to enter the country for non-discretionary purposes.

What Do You Need to Know Before Coming to Canada During the Pandemic?

For the first phase of reopening the Canadian border, mandatory quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated Canadian citizens and permanent residents were eased on Jul 5, 2021. To avoid the quarantine requirement, travelers will be required to provide proof of full vaccination taken at least 14 days before traveling and a negative Covid-19 test result taken no less than 72 hours before arriving in Canada. Unvaccinated travelers will be required to self-isolate at home until the result of their Covid-19 test result.

Canada is trying to ramp up its vaccination drive to avoid a third wave of the pandemic. With the rise in vaccinations, the number of daily Covid-19 cases has also been declining. Currently, at least 70% of all Canadians have received the first dose of their vaccine.

According to medical specialists, it will still take 2-3 months of careful observation of the vaccination drive in Canada and around the world to decide whether to reopen the borders completely.
