The United States offers the highest quality of education in its internationally renowned and prestigious universities to students from all over the world. Every year, the US receives a maximum of student visa applications from China, closely followed by India. A majority of these students intend to extend their stay in the US after completing their study programs.

Most international students prefer applying for the H-1B Visa, given that it operates on a lottery-based system and also eventually provides a pathway for immigration. However, many are increasingly opting for the EB-5 Visa to ensure an extended stay in the US.

Furthermore, the EB-5 Investor Visa is for foreign nationals with substantial capital to invest in a business in the US to attain a “Green Card” (Permanent Resident Card). Foreign nationals with a high net worth are using this pathway to gain legal permanent residence in the US.

What Are the Benefits of Applying for the EB-5 Visa as an International Graduate in the US?

Better Acceptance Rates to Prestigious Schools:

To receive admission into prestigious universities in the US such as MIT, Harvard, Brown, Yale, or Berkeley, international students have to go through a highly competitive process. There are a limited number of seats available for international students, therefore, the percentage of acceptance is relatively low.

Obtaining a Green Card through the EB-5 Visa will allow you to apply to these universities as an American resident. This levels the playing field and gives you a better chance of getting accepted into these universities.

Lower Tuition Fee:

International students are required to pay a premium fee to gain admission to US universities. However, as a Green Card holder, you will be charged the same tuition fee as US citizens and other permanent residents.

Access to Government Aids and Scholarships:

International students do not have access to government aid or any other scholarships. However, having the EB-5 Visa may give you access to certain government aids and scholarships that are not available to the rest of the international students.

Better Work Opportunities:

Since the EB-5 Visa will grant you legal permanent residence in the US, you will have access to better internship and work opportunities compared to other international students.

Many US employers prefer hiring US citizens and Green Card holders as they do not have to go through the process of petitioning for work authorization for the employee. As a Green Card holder, you will also have the benefit of being able to negotiate based on salary, promotions, and job changes.

Is It Easier to Obtain a Green Card Through the EB-5 Visa?

Only 1/3rd of all the international graduates are successful in obtaining the H-1B Visa in the US. Since the H-1B Visa is based on a lottery system, having better qualifications or experience does not improve the chances of successfully obtaining the visa.

Moreover, H-1B Visa holders are under constant scrutiny by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). They must inform the USCIS if there is any change in their job profile, employer, organization, etc. If the H-1B Visa holder is fired and is unable to find another employer, then they will be forced to leave the US.

For many Indian students, the H-1B Visa is not a feasible option due to the lengthy processing times. Compared to the EB-5 Visa, it might take years for an Indian student to obtain the H-1B Visa. Indian students hailing from families with a high net worth are increasingly opting for the EB-5 Visa to immigrate to the US.
