US President Joe Biden issued an executive order to end the Trump Immigration Restrictions on new Green Cards on March 1, 2021.

Former US President Donald Trump halted 4 types of immigration visas including the issuing of Green Cards as a measure to protect the US job market for US citizens.

The ban was set to expire on December 31, 2020, but President Trump extended it until the end of March 2021.

Since Joe Biden took office, he proclaimed that “shutting the door on legal immigrants does not advance the interest of the United States”.

He also added that “It also harms industries in the United States that utilize talent from around the world. And it harms individuals who were selected to receive the opportunity to apply, and those who have likewise received, immigrant visas through the Fiscal Year 2020 Diversity Visa Lottery.”

The ban has resulted in a backlog of 358,000 Green Cards.

What Type of US Immigration Visas Were Revoked By the Trump Administration?

     1. The Trump administration revoked the H-1B Visa that allows US-based companies to hire foreign skilled workers for jobs that require special skills or specialty  occupations. See our H-1B Visa Business Plan service.

This is the most popular visa for East Indian immigrants. Out of all the H1-B Visa applications received by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, 67% of applicants were from India.

The ban was also placed on the H4 Visa that allow the family members of H-1B Visa holders to lawfully enter the US.

     2. The H-2B Visa was also revoked. The H-2B Visa is for foreign workers who wish to work in non-agricultural roles in the US.

     3. The L-1 Visa for foreign workers employed by a US company was also banned.  See our L-1 Visa Business Plan service.

     4. Essentially, the Trump administration banned the issuing of Green Cards, even for the Diversity lottery system.

How will Green Card Programs Proceed in 2021?

According to the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), there is a backlog of over 120,000 family-based immigration visas due to the Trump-era ban.

The ban also stopped thousands of visa lottery winners from coming to the US.

The processing for the backlog visa applications will resume again and thousands of immigrants can regain hope of continuing their immigration journey to the US.
