I am an American and my girlfriend lives in Vancouver. We would like to eventually get married so I plan to begin visiting her regularly in Canada with the intention of one day marrying and applying for permanent residency.Since I will not be able to legally work in Canada, I would like to keep my current job and work remotely from Vancouver while I visit. I would be returning every other month and working from the office here for a few weeks. I've discussed this with my employer and he would like to keep me on as well, but we need to figure out the legality of it. Is it legal for a US citizen to work remotely for a US company while visiting Canada? Are there tax implications? I am trying to get some definitive answers to share with my employer. So far a lot of what I've seen online has been conflicting information. I've also read that as long as I don't spend more than 182 days in Canada I do not have to pay income taxes. I was hoping you could shed some light on this situation for me.
